South Avenue

South Avenue

The main access to South Avenue Park is from corner of South Avenue and Gravel Pit Lane

South Avenue
DE21 7DD

There is no designated parking available for South Avenue Park.

Pedestrian access is from the entrance at the corner of South Avenue and Gravel Pit Lane .  This entrance is closest to the play area.  There is no path here so in bad weather would not be suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

There is a path from the South Avenue side entrance    that leads to the entrance that goes towards Gravel Pit Recreation ground .  Although this does have a path, it is not in great condition. There is also a post at the entrance that may hinder access for larger pushchairs and wheelchairs (see photos)

The   entrance from South Avenue has a short path from the road, leading the the playing fields where the path ends. This is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

About the park

The park is about 1 hectare in size.

South Avenue park is Spondon forgotten war memorial.

After the Armistice in 1918 a memorial in St Werburghs’s Church was unveiled.  In additional to this the village wanted a memorial that could be used by the community.

Fundraising continued with a view to acquiring a playing field. The donations raised by the people of Spondon were sufficient to buy the field known as Horse Croft.

See the information board at the park for more details.
